In my basement I noticed some rust forming on the fittings of the gas line pipes. Don't want to this to eventually rust all the way through and end up with a big problem in terms of a gas leak. Can I just paint over it with some rust inhibiting paint or do I need to properly prep it first? Why is the rust only on the fittings and not on the pipe itself, different materials?

It's not going to rust through. Steels going to rust. If it makes you feel better paint them safty yellow, that's the color code for a gas pipe.

Completely Normal, unless there is no pipe dope. Hard to tell with these pics. Focus? Whats to the right that looks like AB? The fittings are raw Iron pipe, the pipe has a coating on it. This is nothing to worry about at all unless you plan on living for 500 years or so.
