I'm in the middle of a basement remodel, and got the brilliant idea to put a sub-panel in my garage.

I'm not sure I can get an electrician out in time, so I may run the wire myself, before the drywall guys come.

Seems simple enough: but I'm curious about how to run the wire through the rim joist? Do I use an electric box? Or do I just cut a hole for a conduit?

Sorry. Yes. Attached garage.
So what's the question??
If you drill through the rim joist won't you then be in the garage? Why not drill up into the wall cavity and mount the panel on the wall between the house and garage?

Could create issues with the fire wall integrity due to the size of the opening for the panel.

Fire Block foams are not fire resistant. In fact they are often flammable. The most popular one ignites at 240 degrees.

By sealing openings, they prevent air movement from pulling a fire into a stud cavity or other enclosed space, which would contribute to the spread of a fire.

When you want a product that will withstand direct heat or flames, you need a Fire Stop or Fire Barrier product.
