I'm going to do my own rough electrical. I can do this in NC if Im home owner.
Still will need inspections after work. What is your experience with inspector looking at courtesy loop on outlets? if yes, what is correct way to do it ?

The cable gets secured within 8 inches if no clamp or connector is involved, within 12 inches if one is used. The measurement is along the sheath, not just from the box.

When I wire new construction, I will leave about 8-12" of wire outside the box. This ensures that when the drywaller comes along and uses his roto-zip with the blade all the way out and cuts our wires inside the box, we still have wire to rectify this.

Depending on the item being wired, sometimes we will leave more than 12", but this gets complicated quickly because the cable needs to be stapled within 12" of the box, measured along the cable.

Sent from my new phone. Autocorrect may have changed stuff.

OK....what is a courtesy loop.... more than 6" of feed into the box...??????
You are correct.
Wait. You're calling >6" a "courtesy loop"?

That's like calling the check you sent to the IRS a "courtesy payment".

6" is mandatory. Leaving yourself more than 6" is simply refusing to paint yourself into a corner.

If you only leave 6", and you mung up the end of a wire, or strip 1/4" too much insulation or whatever, or remove the wire from backstabs or screws by going SNIP with your wire cutter... then you are in a predicament. You must re-run the entire cable run because you don't have the 6" length.

I like to leave 10" or so in THHN/conduit, but, I can always pull some down from the other end if I gotta.

Wire is cheap, regrets are expensive.

The wire can be spliced to get the 6" if needed. You don't need to replace 14 foot of cable because of a nick.
