going to reroof my garage this summer but have a few questions
for the starter strip do you cut off the tabs? which way do you put the shingle down?
what is proper installation
metal drip edge, ice and water, starter course, shingles?
any other tips i should know?

When using 3 tabs, cutting off the tabs moves the sealing strip down close to the edge. However, starter shingles/strips are readily available and cheaper than buying regular shingles and cutting them.

I like to bed the starter strip in roof cement or thru the roof caulking just a habit living in a hurricaine zone but I think it's good anywhere

I find the regional differences very interesting. I've been roofing for nearly 30 years with another 10 in other construction related fields and the only time I've ever seen any roofing cement used is someplace it should never be used - like smeared all over a slate roof or a chimney. I've never bought any.

All i said was on the starter strip... Ever been in a huricaine trust me it helps

I wasn't disparaging the use of roofing cement. I would agree with your use of it. I guess my point was that it's extremely important that everyone puts their location in their profile. What's necessary in one region is sometimes useless in another.

Yes.

which way do you put the shingle down?

The self sealer strip will be placed to hang over the outer edge of the drip edge and facing up.

ice & water, drip edge, felt, starter course, shingles.

Read up on installation specs before you start.
You can go to the manufacturers website and find all the info you need for free.
Pay special attention to fastening & placement patterns.
