I have been asked about the best choice for roof vents and have researched trying to get a good opinion. I am in central Canada ... so a cold climate. I like the concept of a ridge vent but some others say no. Any feedback would be appreciated.

You should do what works in your location. Typical in the US is continuous ridge and eaves ventilation, but your circumstances may be different. Ask your local BI.

Attic Ventilation

Owning a home is a cold climate as Canada is you should steer away from any plastic vents. Eve and ridge ventilation is by far the best for roof ventilation so if I were you I would look into a GAF Cobra Ridgevent. Cobra ridgevent won't crack in the cold temps.

Please do not even consider the GAF Cobra Ridgevent.
All my roofing supplyers have even stopped selling it, my local Lowes and HD do not sell it anymore because of all the complaints.
If you look on even this site under roofing in the search area you'll see dozens of people having issues with it.
Reason being, it just does not vent enough air.
When I lived up in NH and got stuck even in the winter time having to install roofs never once did we have a problum with the plastic ridge vents.
