So here's what I've got....
1. I have a ground level deck not attached to the house (free standing with 2.5' deep footers).
2. The deck is 16Dx24W

Here's what I want to do...
1. I want to add a shed style roof over the deck.
2. I want to attach the roof to the house with a ledger and use 6x6 posts buried in concrete to support the front of the roof.

Basically the roof would not be attached to the deck at all. It would have it's own concrete footings Is this acceptable? Or does this violate some rule?

You have to call the building department and ask them. They are the only ones who can give you your answer since it's where you live.

It is probably "acceptable" in it's intent but may have to be approved by your local Planning Department if you have one and would certainly need to be permitted.
Permits mean having an acceptable design for the structure (the way it is built, materials, hold-downs etc.) how far from property lines etc.

The piece I'm really wondering about is whether one has to attach the roof posts to the deck. I know codes are different wherever you go, but I would imagine that if the roof is soley supported by it's own footings, then the deck shouldn't come into play. That's what i'm thinking anyway.

I think you may be right ---the roof has little to do with the deck.

Do check local code----Buried posts are not allowed in many areas--
A pier with the post on top might be required.---Mike---

ok, here's the next question on this. I'm doing a shed roof over the deck. It will be rustic (brown stained posts, open rafters, brown ceiling fan, etc.). Would you put gutters and downspouts on this? The vision I have in my head says no, but someone suggested that. What do you think?
