I know you are supposed to leave at least 1/2" of outer jacket past the cable clamp in the panel but wondr if there is a maximum. I plan on upgrading my service panel in the next few years and will combine the sub panel into the main at that time. I want to leave as much extra cable as possible so there are no splices needed to combine the panels.

There is no stated limit, except if you attempt to exceed the fill requirements.

I'd leave a jag coiled up outside of the panel if it would remain accessible.
