I know you are supposed to leave at least 1/2" of outer jacket past the cable clamp in the panel but wondr if there is a maximum. I plan on upgrading my service panel in the next few years and will combine the sub panel into the main at that time. I want to leave as much extra cable as possible so there are no splices needed to combine the panels.

That's just as easy. I was just worried the inspector wouldn't like to see that. Is ther a limit or does it just need to look neat?

There is no stated limit, except if you attempt to exceed the fill requirements.

I'd leave a jag coiled up outside of the panel if it would remain accessible.
