I had a new central system installed recently. The original air handler had a 6-2 romex coming through the ceiling of the closet and entered into the side of the unit. (the 6-2 is used because there's a 10kw electric strip in there)

The AC contractor used the same romex and terminated it the same way. But he made some comment that it might not pass inspection and might have to be in greenfield. I have them coming out next monday to look at the job their installer did. Do you think the romex is ok? There's no way to go back to the circuit breaker panel without ripping a lot of drywall as the closet is upstairs and the cb panel is downstairs. I guess a junction box could be put in the upper attic and from there go down into the closet with greenfield and thhn wire.

React on the results of the inspection. One less wire splice the better.

The existing wiring should be ok. The worst case scenario is that a box would need to be installed where the romex enters the closet and terminated there. From that point a flexible conduit can be attached to that box and run with appropriate wiring to the furnace. It will not be a big deal to change it if need be.:yes:

I guess using "greenfield" is like using "scotch tape" Anyway, should have said flexible metallic conduit.
Would it still be ok to put the junction box in the attic? It would still be accessible up there. Here's an idea (maybe bad?) Put the existing romex in the flexible metallic conduit and avoid another splice?

What you see in the attached drawing is how the house was built in 1983. There's a box on the floor with a double pole breaker (I'm not home and don't remember the breaker size) The romex enters and leaves this box and goes up in the wall to the attic and then comes back down in the closet and enters the side of the new air handler. There's about 4 feet of exposed romex that the installer was concerned with. The new air handler unit has a "pull to disconnect" handle on the front cover. The only access I have (short of ripping drywall) is the section in the closet and the section that loops in the attic area.

Not shown is another romex (8-2) going from the downstairs main cb panel to the new outside condensor unit.

As long as the cable is fastened to follow the surface and not subject to physical damage you are fine.
