I've always cut in, roll, let dry then cut and roll again, done. I see guys talking about rolling, then cutting. Does this mean to roll first coat (as close to ceiling, base, casing as possible) and let it dry completely, then come back and cut in and roll on the second coat? I'm confused as to if you cut in on both coats, or just the second.

Your way is fine. With the new paints- it is also good on the first coat to roll first- cut twice and then finish roll.

Yeti, I do the same thing. It is "old school" but effective. As BJ suggests, with the new chemistry of today's paints, you can just about do it anyway that is comfortable and convenient for you. You don't get as much hat banding or holidays like you did with the old formulas.
For the "New school" method, do you roll the first coat and let it dry completely without cutting in? Or do you still cut in twice just reversing the order of rolling and cutting? Just trying to figure out if there is a better way compared to what I've always done. And if you would choose one method over the other based on light or dark colors.

As long as it is cut in twice before the final rolled coat your good to go.Always roll it as closely as you can on the second coat.As fast as modern paint dries,it's almost impossible to roll it before your cut-in starts drying even if you do one wall at a time.

i cut in a wall then roll it to cover up most of the brush marks then go to the next wall and so on. depending on the size of the room i can start the second coat when i get back around from where i started

Cut in 1 wall, (if you don't have a helper) then roll into the drying cut in
I retired from Union Painting business after 30+ years and this method produces the best end result ! If you see someone rolling first it is usually because they lack the experience to KNOW what needs cut in, without first rolling. Good Luck,,, Steve

The new acrylics, particularly the BM gennex dry so fast you don't have a chance to do that, and actually its recommended not to.
Roll, cut twice and finish roll tight is a very acceptable method.

I actually retired from IBPAT around 10 yrs ago due to disabilitys, I still RAT a little when I can find any, I must be pretty Old School, guess I need to take a refresher course,,,, I Do like the acrylic varnish tho, I used it on a RAT project at the customers request because she couldn't deal with the smell of the real stuff,,, I Liked it,, worked good and looked good !!
