Hi. I recently bought a house built in the late 60s. The return filter size is 15 x 30 5/8 x 1. Is there a way to retrofit the opening to take a more currently available filter size? I have found this filter size online, but they are mostly junk filters, or the better ones are much more expensive than normal. Thanks

Yes, but most return air filter slots are field produced and installed.
Something could be made to work.
What do you consider a “better filter”?

For example, I've found Merv 8 filters 12-pack for over $100, while other sizes on Amazon same count and quality are $60 or less. And the only way to get that quality and somewhat decent price is to buy a 12-pack or more. The AC is dated 2006, so it could go anytime (in AZ on the roof), so maybe I will get it changed then.

What are you considering junk filters? Mine are considered junk and our central heat/air system is 37 years old with a blower wheel that's never been cleaned and doesn't need cleaning.

Filters should be changed twice a year at a minimum preferably before each season summer/winter. Depends on how much you use the system and pets

You may get by with a 6 month interval with a 4" pleated media filter in a clean home but the regular 1" filters will likely need changing every month.
