My heating unit is located in my rear entrance/laundry room. I have dogs and they enter through a dog door in this room. The return air vent is presently in this location, I am considering moving it to the bathroom on the other side of the wall. My thinking is the air will be cleaner there no dog traffic, but there is a heat vent within 5 feet of the proposed location is this a problem?

Never install a return vent in a bathroom. You are just asking for problems. You don't want all that moisture along with other odors being distributed throughout the house.

just use and check a good filter.

Are you on a slab, crawlspace, or basement? You really need the return so that it balances the air in the home, otherwise you will end up with hot & cold spots.
