My return is in the way of jacking up my floor. I have a floor return and the box under it is 3 times as big as the duct it feeds. Is their a reason For this?

I tryed to get a picture but it is in a crawl space. My ? is. Is their a reason why that were my cold are duct draws air from a floor register does it need to be biger than the duct it feeds. The duct work is 12x24 that is also the register size but the box is 48x48 by 60 long.
