How important is it I have return air on my second floor?

How important is it that the return air is 'away' from the supply vent?

What's like... the best distance to keep the supply from the return?

Supply register on outside wall,return on inside wall.You need return airflow.

Second floors are chronic problem spaces in regards to temperature. Properly designed duct and properly sized equipment are critical when trying to maintain consistent temperature throughout a home.

what if the existing wireing, finish work, and overall structure of the house makes it extremely difficult to put the return on the opposing inside wall, but very simple to put it 12 feet away in the corner of the room?

Its a half story btw.... 1 outside wall, 2 'attic' walls angling down to the slope of the roof, and one inside wall....

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand the question.

It is what we call a 'half story'; where the ceiling follows the pitch of the roof on the two opposing sides of the 2nd floor. We have two dormers in the middle which is where the bathroom and stairs are respectivley. On either side of the bathroom are two bedrooms.

The bedrooms are what I am concerned installing return air in.

Each Room has an outside wall where the supply is already installed directly under a the window. Then opposing the outside wall is the inside wall. The two adjacent walls are at an angle following the roof untill they disappear into the ceiling to create the pitch where the attic is.

Had returns put in every bedroom upstairs. Each room is a better more comfortable place.
