The depth required for a retaining wall footing depends on a number of factors, none of which you have discussed.

1. Type of retaining wall (segmental block, reinforced concrete, wood)
2. Difference in height between the uphill part of the wall and the downhill part of the wall (retained earth height)
3. Type of soil you are building on
4. Water table elevation on the uphill and downhill side of the retaining wall
5. Type of drainage system (if any) you plan to install
6. If you are planning a segmental block retaining wall, type of earth reinforcing you plan to install.

So tell us in detail what you are planning, what you are trying to achieve, and perhaps we can help you out.

For that situation, you will someone to design a solution using the answers from his questions plus more that can be expected.

One of the sections of steps were made from rejects from a local concrete producer and there is no reliability on if because the material they hide is totally unknown, so they may be an asset or a liability to torn out.

Thank you for all the questions.

1. Reinforced concrete block wall
2. 4 foot (currently it is 6 ft height from the ground.. but I plan to make it plain along with the other area.. then it will be 4 ft).
3. The soil here is little rocky.. I can say not clay type.
4. How do I know this ?
5. 1" Drainage lines through the wall .. pour gravel around the pipe.

Please let me know if there are any other questions that helps to answer my question.
