Hi,
I want to replace an old RR tie retaining wall in my yard with concrete blocks like this Pavestone block sold at HD, or this Oldcastle block sold at Lowes. Both are roughly the same dimensions, and have a stated maximum height of 2' (6 courses).
However, I'm wondering if I can get away with a slightly taller wall. I'm planning to lay a base of compacted gravel, and then set the first course of blocks below grade so there is a solid footing. Then, I'd like to build up to 7 layers on top of that plus a 2" wall cap, so there would be 30" above grade. I'll back-fill most of the wall with crushed stone.
Has anyone used these for blocks taller walls? I know there are lots of retaining wall products out there that are rated for 3-4' wall heights, but from what I've seen you pay at least 50% more for materials. So, I'd really like to use these cheaper blocks. My wall will be just slightly taller than the stated maximum height, so I'm hoping I can get away with it.
Thanks,
Mark
