My cedar shingles have old semi transparent stain. One wall was never stained. There is black in a few places . Tried some stripper on a spot and cleaner on the one wall. It works but what a chore to do the whole house. Could I just restain over the whole thing as long as I do a little sanding to remove flakes? Maybe a darker stain than what is on now to hide things? Is adhesion a problem if you dont strip and or clean?

Might be a bit drastic to strip it all down. It actually might do more damage to the shingles anyway. I would GENTLY pressure wash to get off any dirt. You might have to apply some bleach solution to any mildewed areas to get it off the cedar. Might be time to apply a SOLID color stain since it sounds like the shingles are in pretty rough shape. I would consider WOODSCAPES from Sherwin-Williams.........lots of colors to choose from and the solid stain provides much more UV protection than semi-transparent.
