Has anyone seen anything like this before in a wood knot. Found it on a post in my basement stairwell. Just would like to know what it is and how to fix it.

That looked like that when the lumber was cut long ago.
Anyone that cared about there work ever would have used that piece.

Not sure if it really needs fixing, but if you want to fill it, try Bondo.

If that is a weight bearing stud, it needs to go.
If it is a non load stud, you can fill the hole with any filler sold at the box store.

Then cover it back up and forget it.
