i did a thorough inspection on my siding yesterday. Its in worse shape than i thought, and i dont think most of it will work as underlayment for vinyl. So, im thinking it might be better to put up new smartpanel siding and forget the vinyl. Ive got two questions.
1. What is the easiest way to hold the 4'x8' panel in place while i nail it up? Its much too heavy and a simple 2x4 wont work like it does for a cabinet.

2. How do i seal it at the top? There is no overhang of the roof, and it doesnt leak at the present time, and i would like for it to continue to be waterproof. Ive included a few pictures i found of the outside, and you can see the lack of eaves and bad condition of the siding.

Current siding is T-111. I had originally planned to replace it with vinyl, but now planning on using Smart panel cement fiber siding.

Please help, any advice will help!

Then I would think it'd tuck
up under the existing flashing.

And you'll need a helper to
get those panels up and steady
till you get a few nails in.

Smart panel is not a cement siding, it's treated OSB.
Use ring shanked siding nails or galvinized spiral nails.
The siding nails are best because of the smaller head.
Measue how tall that wall is, it only comes in 8' panels.

Not likly your going to be able to get the siding in under the seam at the roof line. Just use the Z moulding made for T-111.

I'm assuming that's why there is the freeze board under the gable to break up the seams. Yeah def want up get under everything even if u dado the bottom of new freeze and flash over top of it so new piece goes over flashing to keep water tight. Don't want to rely on over applied caulk

Get rid of the frieze board.
Use galvanized z flashing
as joe suggested.

are you going to replace windows? when you reside it would be the best time to do that

Your going to say you can not afford but this is a great material to use instead or those boards that are up there now.
No more painting or rot to deal with.
Just install so the datto is on the bottom so the siding can be slid into it.

To hold up a 4x8 panel myself I usually attach a short length of 2x4 horizontally at waist level to a act as a handle. I use a couple screws to attach it, and putty the holes when I go to paint.
