Replacing register boot insulation

5264 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  beenthere
What is the proper type of insulation to use in HVAC register boots? Does anyone sell kits where it is already cut to size? (Besides buying a whole new boot obviously.)

What happened is whoever built my house was too lazy to mask the boots off during construction. They sprayed ceiling texture up into the boots, and the texture stuff has become moldy. Everything else is clean. I can say for certain the texture being sprayed onto the insulation is the problem.

Thank you for any help.

Does anyone know what type of insulation is safe to use in the register boots? The one I need to replace is yellow fiberglass, about an inch thick, with a black backing that feels kind of like paper.

Probably better off removing the insulation, and then insulating the outside of the boot.
