I am in the middle of a bathroom renovation and found this wonderful gem when I took the old cast iron tub out. I am comfortable with everything except plumbing, especially for this project since once I get the tub in, there is no way to access the soon to be p-trap underneath.

My question is what do you guys think is the best plan of attack for replacing this drum trap. Please keep in mind this is a duplex I own and the remodel is in the upper bathroom, therefore there is no access to the drain and trap from underneath. I couldnt believe this thing hasn't leaked before, the old waste and drain were literally hanging there by a few strands of sealant.

Any and all help is always appreciated!

You will need to nip back the floor just a bit --then saw off the T---then cut the vent just above the cast iron---add rubber frenco fittings in those two places----and replace the whole thing with PVC--

Does not look like to bad a job---you will kill a few Saws All blades, however.

Get rid of any of that old steel pipe you can while it's all open.
It will all leak at some point and it closes up o the insides as it rust.

Keep the vents, everything else should be changed to DWV PVC. Use long sweep sanitary fittings, and fernco rubber couplings to adapt PVC to Iron.

Drum traps make a lot of sense, but they are not used any more. Too Bad.

Record exactly where your trap is, in case you need to cut an access door later. You probably wont need it with PVC though, as long as your tub has a strainer.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think I am going to bring in a pro for this one, especially for the reason mentioned before, once the trap and pipes are glued and set, they become virtually inaccessible and I would hate to have a leak because of my poor work. Thanks again!

Never say never, I would not have a drain and trap system I couldn't access especially if I was renovating it. There has to be a way to keep that area open for access even if you have to frame in access doors or floor board removal.
