Hi guys first time posting.. appreciate any help. This is probably a dumb question but here goes:

Under cabinet lighting in the kitchen, there are three different sections in the kitchen that have the lighting. We dont need them all on so we actually only use one under cabinet light in one section of the kitchen. This particular section is divided into two lighting groups that have their own wires coming out of the wall (excuse my technical illiteracy of terms) with an 18 inch and a 15 inch fluorescent bulb in each group. The one we like and want to keep using is one of these 18 inch bulbs.

Unfortunately, the ballast on this one and this one only is on the way out (noticeably discolored, loud buzzing). After trying to replace the bulb and starter I realized there is no other option but replacing the ballast or the entire light fixture. Due to the location we'd rather not use any of the other lights instead.

My question is, how difficult is it to swap out one of the working ballasts from another lighting section (probably the other 18 inch fixture ballast) that we do not use? There are only two wires going into the magnetic ballast itself. Can i just cut the two wires, swap the alternate ballast in, then refit the wires to each other, throw some electrical tape on there and call it a day?

I can post a picture if that helps but any advice would be awesome! I've exhausted every other option so far..

I think it would be a better idea to buy a new ballast to install. It might be easier to remove the fixture to install the ballast.

Your idea is to install a used ballast that may fail a year from now. You would leave one light fixture unable to operate at all. Someday you may want that light working. You may sell the house in the future and the purchasers will want that light restored.

You need to use wire connectors for your splices, not electrical tape.
