Yes and Yes. Don't forget 2 label the wires B4 removing the thermostat. You should also get a reputable experienced Pro in to check the furnace for safety issues, cracked heat exchanger etc 2 B safe.
Replacing Furnace filter questions

I've been reading the forums for a while and find them extremely helpful, this is my first post, though.
My wife and I recently purchased our first home. The "To-do" list is pretty long. One thing I need to do is to change the filters in my furnace. It's a gas unit. I know where the panel is that needs to be removed to swap the filters is. My question is about turning it off. There is an electrical switch on the side of the furnace. I'm wondering if all I need to do is to switch this off before changing the filters? When I turn it back on, there are no pilots to light or anything like that? I know this is a really simple thing to do, I just don't want to blow up my house!
Secondary question. If the switch is how to turn off the furnace, is that the same thing that I should use if I'd like to replace the thermostat for the house?
