We are "attempting" to replace the deck floor and handrail. The structure is fine so we are just replacing the deck boards and handrail.

My question is, I know people generally get the deck done, and then seal the boards. Can you seal the boards first, and then, install the boards onto the deck? i would think that it is easier (better working height) and better seal (more thoroughly applied). Then, after installation, reseal the part where the screws go in and cuts have been made.

Any thoughts? Thank you!

as long as the decking is dry enough that is the way to do it:thumbsup:

That's what I did. I sealed the bottom and the sides of the boards, then mounted them, then sealed the top. Came out really well.

Nothing says the sealer has to be applied after the decking is installed.

As CoconutPete mentioned, it's also a good way to seal both the top and bottom of the boards. It may take a little longer doing each board individually, but it's probably easier on the back.

While you have the structure exposed, don't forget to seal the joists, beams, and posts.

Sure, you can do that. But you'll also want to seal the whole thing once it's assembled.

Lots more work, but it may very well be worth the extra effort.
