hey folks,

I have a single handle Moen tub faucet that I'm trying to do some work on. A little description first. My bathtub faucet is teardrop shaped with the point of the teardrop pointing towards the floor. So when looking at it the writing is actually upside down. So to turn on the water I start rotating counter-clockwise going from the bottom and up to the right.

Now the problem. Simple, the faucet is leaking out of control and I'm trying fix it myself. I removed the knob and plate & shut off the water. At this point I thought I would be able to simply remove the cartridge & replace it or see a piece that I can remove & replace. However, I do not. I did slip out a horseshoe-like/wishbone-like piece but that's all I've done so far.

what next? please advise.

You should (I think) be able to just pull the cartridge out and then insert a new one.

that wishbone thing you are talking about is the clip that keeps the cartridge from blowing out when the water is on. Once you have that out you can just pull the cartridge out then install a new one then put the clip back in.

Sometimes those cartridges are a B$#@% to get out. While there are Moen cartridge pullers on the market you can buy for $40 or so. I had a Moen rep tell me to spray some hairspray on the exposed part of the old cartridge and work it left to right with the plastic "cap" that comes with a new cartridge. The trick is to not turn the old cartridge more than 90 degrees either direction or the rubber can tear and become lodged in the faucet body. The hairspray actually causes the rubber to shrink up enough to get the cartridge out with a set of channel locks.

Yeah, I didnt believe it either til I tried it....

Shower Faucet

I just replaced a Moen shower faucet the other day. By the way, they have a lifetime guarantee) You can buy one at your local store and send back the old one. I would call them first. Once you get ready, shut off the house water remove cap, handle and chrome sleeve. Pull out horseshoe ring. With the new insert comes a white plastic cap-tool. push it into the old insert and and rotate it 360 a couple of times. It will loosen and to whole insert should come out. Put in the new one (read instructions) and don't forget the horseshoe clip!
