Just toying with the idea of making our basement more open and removing 3 support colums (probably made of brick or block). Certainly the adivice of an engineer is in order, but I am wondering if anyone has an idea of how much a project of this sort will cost.

Removing the columns costs virtually nothing. Replacing the existing support beam with a properly sized beam capable of supporting the load, priceless.
