Need to replace an outlet, but once I got it opened up, realized there were a couple of extra wires coming from the wall, outside of the housing. Can I just braid the black and cap the red here?

Thanks.

It had actually caused the power to go out in the room. The red and black coming from the wall were not attached to anything nor were they covered.

Was there any signs of arcing or burning on either loose wire?

If not just cap them off individually, and be done with them.

If arcing signs, find out why, fix that.

was the outlet broken, or bad somehow?

Were the wires backstabbed in the device? They may have just pulled out from a loose connection.

Also look to see if the brass tab was broken between the screws.

Thanks for the help.

Got the outlet replaced and verified all the wires are tight. I hadnt been getting any reading from that outlet, but lights are still out and getting an indication of an open neutral from that and one other outlet. None of them were back stabbed and all wires are tight on the screws. Proving to be a lot of fun.
