A friend asked me to help replace a tub in his bathroom. I've torn out cast iron tubs and replaced with a new one before but never dealt with a drain like this. Can I just cut out the drum trap and then use a proflex type coupling to adapt from the current drain line to new PVC with a new PVC P trap and new tub drain for the new tub?

Remove all of it including the overflow, and the drum trap, and replace it all with PVC.

That's the plan. Just wondering after I cut out the drum trap what the best way to adapt to PVC is? Just a proflex coupling?

Yes a proflex will do the trick. On the outlet side of the drum trap is it galvanized or copper. Whatever it is buy that type pipe by plastic proflex.
