I am redoing my entire fireplace. Veneer stones changing the dimensions etc.

The hearth that is on the fireplace are currently tiles. Can i just mortar over the top of that and place a slab of granite on it? Is it really a big deal that the entrance from the hearth into the fireplace wont be flush?

Its natural gas so its not like i am taking things in and out of the fireplace
