Hello I'm doing a bathroom remodel and came across this problem. Not very good with plumbing know very little. No my home was built in 1958 and it has an Eljer faucet. All I want to do was replace the handles with something more modern. After removing a knob it has a stem that sticks out about 4inches from the wall with a lil star shaped end. Now my question is if I unscrew the stem from the brass piping can I purchase a new stem and handles( differnt brand as for I can not locate this kind)? I didn't know if I would be able to just put any kind of stem into that brass fixture and get a handle that matches up or not. I'm really stuck on this. I did purchase a whole in faucet set which has handles and a whole new brass piping that goes behind the was. But the previous home owner sprayed some kind of cement or something on all the pipes back there so there in remove able. Please help

No you can not just change the stems with a differant brand.
Have you check the Eljer web site to see what they offer?
There is universal fit knobs you can buy.

Take one of the ones you have now and match them up or just buy universal fit. They come with differant adapters for differant knobs.
Sounds like you have what's called a spline.

They do make universal fit all kits i would not recommend them, they tend to have a low life span, i would go with the original handles and trim, if you cant find them there is a place here in Miami thats been around for about 70 years and have tons of old new stock on hundreds of faucets, post a pick and i will forward it to them.
