I fitted tile using USG shower system membrane. I’ve had some of the glass tile crack (I think due to the temperature difference of the cold wall outside in Chicago) so I have to remove them and replace. Question is, the mortar won’t come off the membrane so how do I get new tile on keeping the tile flush? I’ve got to get the mortar down to the membrane without damaging the membrane or cut out the membrane and replace but to get the overlap I’d have an extra layer of thinset and therefore an uneven surface

I tried sanding the mortar down with a flat stone but it’s just so heavy going it will take a long time
