repairing brick stairs

I'm new to home ownership. The grout between my front step bricks is crumbling. One or two bricks are, too. What questions should I ask contractors when call for repair estimates?
What are the correct answers?

That is not grout, that is mortar, and if it is crumbling, I would find a good mason for a look-see. Catch it before it becomes a major problem.

I'm new to all this. Thanks for giving me the right vocabulary to use.
I know that I need to take care of it...it's a blind item for me. So, I need some advice about what questions to ask. I live on Long Island in NY. Any idea what it should cost me?
