Repainting siding after close fire

My barn burned down about 20 feet from my house. The house is an old cape with painted wood clapboard siding. The heat broke all of the windows and the paint is charred and peeling. There is also a spot where the siding started to ignite. I've attached a picture of the siding. My question, the fire chief says the siding should be replaced because the high heat from the fire will prevent new paint from sticking. The insurance adjuster just wants to strip, seal and repaint. Who is correct?

Sure would look a whole lot better to reside it, and while your at it add a siding block where that condinsate comes out of the wall.
If that's a sewer gas vent instead rerun it out the roof.
As old as that looks your going to be dealing with lead paint so removing it would make more since then trying to strip it.

Just from what I can see some of the siding looks warped by the heat and some look like they were starting to burn. I would only go with re side to avoid problems down the road.

Gotta agree with Joe and Toolseeker. That siding is a mess and it would take more work AND $$$ to restore compared to just replacing it. I'm sure the insurance company would agree........they like to save a buck any way they can!!!

+1 for new siding. I'm not sure about the heat making the paint not bond but stripping and replacing a few boards would not be acceptable to me.Plus the amount of work would cost more than new siding and it would never look right.

Thanks all for the insights. I'm pushing the insurance company to replace the siding. BTW, that is a sewer vent on the side put in by a previous owner. This is the perfect time to fix it.
