Removing one switch from a three gang box

4344 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  paintdrying
I have three lights switches in one box. The middle switch is basically a filler switch. I still to this day flip the dead switch trying to turn lights on. My question is, do they make a filler plate, or some sort of cover plate that is long enough but with one less hole. I can remove the switch, or even move the dead switch to one of the ends if that would help. I would rather not cut drywall and put a double gang box in.

Get a 3 gang plate for 2 toggle switches and a receptacle. Replace the dead switch with a receptacle. Very handy for plugging in the vacuum cleaner.
Lowes and HD both have a moduler system where you can make up almost and configuration. The pieces just snap together.

But they look like crap

The blank adapter for a toggle switch does exist, but you probably won't find it locally unless it is an electrical supply house. Online, even Amazon has them.

The OP would need to verify a neutral was present (or run one) to accomplish this one.

I found one of these at Home Depot for a lot less than the Amazon price. We had a similar setup where third switch was for a second outdoor light that was removed.
I will consider an outlet. I checked the big box but could not find anything. I would rather just go to an electrical suppy house. No patience for bigbox stores with no one around, and no one that even knows anything.
