Removing old carpet, left over glue...best way to remove it?

6173 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  SKIP4661
I'm remodeling the basement and I'm removing the old crappy rug. Under the rug was padding and the padding was put down with some type of adhesive. Is there an easier way of getting this up, it takes me about 15 minutes to scrape up a couple square feet. :censored:

In the picture, the white spots are the actually cement floor while the brown is the glue.

I can't really see the texture of the glue from the picture, but if it's flat for the most part, you could go ahead and lay your new floor right over it. This would also depend on the type of floor you were gonna put in, too. What are you planning on putting over it?

I'm guessing we couldn't tell the difference if we put carpet back down right? We're not sure if we're going hardwoods or carpet yet plus I need to build some walls so the floor has to be level for that too.
Yeah I wouldn't worry about tearing it up anymore if you're gonna put more carpet down, or laminate or tile for that matter. If you opted for hardwood, you would probably have to go with a glue down type since you can't staple into cement, and any adhesive that you use should go fine on what's already there.
power scraper

I rented a power scraper from Home Depot when faced with similar - took it up fairly easily, much easier than by hand.
Try heating it with a heat gun, that should soften it enough to scrape it up with a putty knife.
