Looks like a cold air return. Still need that. Might be able to relocate to the attached wall. You'll have to see where it goes above and below.

Removing kitchen pantry
In the process of removing the built in pantry. When I opened the first wall I found there were vents in the floor and ceiling. The basement below is finished and the master is above. The pantry is located in the middle of the house. Not sure of the purpose of the vents but I would like to cover and install cabinets. Anyone know if there would be an issue to close the openings? The pantry is original to the house which was built in 2005
