I have light fixtures up in a couple trees. The cable goes under the driveway and then up the trees. There is a switch in the garage for this by the subpanel. It is on a 15A breaker, but the wire seems to be 12 gauge.

I need to remove the trees. How do I safely cap off the wiring? I would like to keep the circuit available for something in the future.

Disconnect the hot side (black wire) of this cable from the breaker in the subpanel, and curl it up nd push it to the side.

The difficult part is that you need to have two contractors, not one, deal with the tree. First contractor carefully removes the wires from teh tree and far enough away so the second contracto does not damage the wires ahen takeng down the tree.
