At this stage I want to ask how I should remove the shower surrounds. It is nailed to bare studs and has drywall go over the lip. The bottom lip covers the bathtub. I am thinking to cut the drywall maybe 6 inches out from the surround and then remove the surround. I would install the same type of surround and then replace the drywall.
Or should I just remove the drywall all the way to the next seam? Thanks

Picture would be nice so we can see what your up against.
Textured walls or ceiling?
If not then cut at the top of the wall where it meets the ceiling and remove the whole piece.
Far easier then having to tape a butt seam and not have to add blocking to support such a narrow piece.
