Hi.

I have been told by several people that once wallpaper is removed, and the glue scrubbed away, the walls must be primed with an OIL base primer.

Is the true? I have also heard from another prop that I should use only water based primer.

Walls were properly sized.

Which is correct?

Thanks.

No, either Zinsser Gardz, latex, or Zinsser Cover Stain, oil. Personally, thought the smell is stronger, I like the oil. The problem I had with Gardz, I'm trying to convert, is it goes on light milky white and dries clear. On a white wall it was difficult to see how it was applying, and I could tell afterwards that I had a few holidays (misses). If Brushjockey comes along I want to ask him if he ever tints his, I've done some research and it seems the jury is split on that verdict. If it can be tinted I think I'll convert permanently.

From the website regarding Gardz:
used for...
"...wallcovering adhesive residue..."

Good to know.

Sherwin-Williams always had a "PreWallcovering Primer" that was outstanding. Like Guardz, it sealed any residual adhesive & went on like a regular white primer. I always used it on commercial wallcovering jobs when hanging the big sheets of solid vinyl. Never had any problems.

Hush! That's a top secret trick!

If you are using Gardz in a sheetrock repair mode where penetration is really important- don't tint.
But to cover a cleaned wall after stripping about 25% 123 helps both to see and thickens it up a bit.
But once you get the hang of it using it straight ( always start your roll on the upstoke- no pressure..) It's pretty hard not to get coverage. it wants to fly off your roller.
