Hi
I wanted to start painting my picket fence this year. There is some growth that needs to be removed. What is the recommended method of removing this mold?

Should I pressure wash first which would remove the mold and much of the old paint or scrub with some kind of detergent?

Scrap it then wash it. It needs scrapped to get the loose paint off anyway, then scrub, let dry completely, prime and paint.

Just my opinion....
That's too much of a hassle for a picket fence.
Maybe take it apart and plane it.
I would take it down and put up a vinyl/PVC.

Pressure wash on lowest pressure. Keep the nozzle at a good distance or the wood will be damaged. It might be damaged anyway. It doesn't look to be in the greatest shape.

Otherwise scrape it not scrap it, although scrapping it might not be a bad idea.

Thanks for the suggestions. If I were to use the vinyl then can I still use the wood post in the ground already?

thats not mold its a type of moss( plant like growth)...spray with some bleach to kill it, then pressure wash and paint..

It looks like lichen to me.

lichen and mold are both FUNGI.

Just on what material they grow on differentiates them.

And if the posts are still good you can hang vinyl on them.

Ayuh,.... Whatever the stuff is, I use used antifreeze in a garden sprayer to kill the stuff, 'n the rains wash it away,.....

Alittle less harsh than bleach, through I do like beach for alota things,....

That wood is pretty much gone. I wold replace it with a Cedar fence if you still want the same style. If flat, you can just buy the sections. If not even, I would buy the raw Cedar and rent a table saw if you cannot borrow one from a neighbor and get same to help you put up the new one. The plastic looks cheap and does break after a while.
