My house is from 1970 and has large ugly rock siding columns. They are sunk in mortar. I am wanting to tear down to replace with something with more curb appeal, but I am afraid of what might be underneath. Anyone have any experience with updating this type of oldschool rock siding?

Today it would be a plywood box built around a post that is holding things up.
Can you post some pictures of the bottom and the top, we can look for hints.

Try to pry some off to see what it is. If it is a veneer, pry it all off. If it is real rocks, shore up whatever it supports and smash away. Then rebuild with what you want.

IMO rock has a lot of curb appeal. There is a rock mason a few miles down the road that covered the brick [including columns] on his house with rock. I like the look of his house a lot better now.

Pics of what you have would be nice!
