heres a photo of my porch:


Im wanting to tear up this yucky 2X6 deck and 2X4 wood railing and redo the entire surface with something really nice like tile. Looking for advice on what to lay down. below this deck is a garage. Garage "roofing" (under deck) consists of an old roll out type roofing membrane.
Thinking of tearing up all the deck with supports, getting right down to the roofing membrane, sweep it all off nicely, then build up whatever necessary to ultimitaly lay down a nice ceramic tile. Finally, wrap a tasteful wrought iron fence in place of this rusticky (a real word??)looking awful 2x4 rail.

Can you tel me what youd recommend on top of the roofing? Plastic sheating, then ext plywood, then "cement board", then the tile?

I'll let the real roofing guys comment on what to do with the roof.
I'd forget about trying to use any form of tile and go with a composite PVC coated decking instead with hidden fastners and composite railings.
I'd bet those railing are floppy because the framing for the decking was done wrong in the first place. No way to know without removing the decking.
Using nails instead or through bolting, no blocking where the post are is very common to see.
There's dozens of differnant rail systems, from cable, anidized aluminum, acrilic panels, composit.
How the deck framing gets rebuilt would be determined on what railing you pick.
Might want to try a google search.

Hmmmm, whats wrong with real tile? Whats composite PVC coated decking? Guess I can google that too........Plastic floors/surfaces geez- should be a last resort for one trying to accomplish the real look and beauty of natural/classic materials.

The problums come in because pressure treated lumber expands and contracts, and flexes to much.
If you hold on a while Mike or Jazz will pipe in with there opions.

Sure, Joe, no problem- Im patient with this as it wont be done for a while- gotta "kick it around" first. But, to reply to your point about shifting plywood, would the cement board ABOVE the ply not shift around? Just pondering......

Still, its a good point to really think about tile and its "weaknesses".

Decks are rarely done in tile because of the exaggerated dimensional changes of the framing due to seasonal variations in humidity. Makes it much more difficult to avoid cracking etc.

You may want to consider a dimensionally stable, moisture resistant wood such as ipe, that is what I did my deck with. My rails are cumaru. If you are concerned about destroying tropical hardwoods so you can have a nice deck, you can look into the plastic wood composites like Trex. Personally I did not like the way the composites looked, and I got over my concern about exotic wood destruction, but it is a real concern, and others may feel very differently.

IPE also know as Iron wood is one tough wood and when done should never need sealing, bugs do not have a chance trying to eat it.
It's so hard it has to be predrilled if it gets screwed down. Plan on going through a few blades while tring to cut it.
The best look if you can find it is with groves on the sides so you can use hidden fastners.
No way is it ever going to rot out.

This is just to give you an idea of what it looks like.
The only draw back is it's super expencive.

after any nec repairs, you might consider overlaying deck w/new coating,,, we used ' encore ' [ no financial interest ],,, worked great & has ability to be tinted any color your bride commands :laughing: our deck's 30/35yrs old & wasn't blt w/p/t lumber,,, annual cleaning w/elixir of bleach/dawn dish detergent/eye of newt doesn't bother me but applying same deck stain is stupid yr after yr especially KNOWING there's no paint that withstands foot traffic,,, also know nagzilla is the final ' controlling authority ' ( shades of algore strikes again ! ),,, w/encore, i pressure wash at maybe 1,000psi,,, ga claystains are a pita ( dog tracks up the stairs ) but i'm farther ahead after a truck brush scrub w/aforementioned elixir & a good rinse :thumbup:

I have redesigned decks like this in Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa etc. and I like using the vinyl coverings.
It acts like an other roof with glass railings and other railings.

You didnt mention where this house is loacted. Is the sun Bad? Hummidity? Near water? Freeze/thaw? It doesnt look like it's easy framing to get to, so I would do it in steel. For the decking, it matters about sun and the other things I listed. I live in Colorado, and nothing stands up to the sun except real stone; and yes it is possible. I just need more info.

sunny dry area. gets 32 deg F to 100F. yes, i like rock.

You are dealing with what is considered a low slope plaza deck installation. You have still not told us what type of roofing you have in place, but I suspect it is because you do not know. This is going to be like pulling teeth, judjing by the fact that you gave me one wide view of your deck and thats it. Based on your location, I suspect you have one or two plies of D-226 felt mopped in ASTM D-312 type III asphalt and a mopped 90 lb. Granular Surfaced cap sheet. This is pretty standard in So. California.

Some questions:

1. How does you roof drain? I know you said it has slope. Which way?

2. How are you current posts attached?

3. Remove those few short boards where your deck abuts the slab and take a couple of pictures. Remove a couple of deck planks and lets see a post base.

4. What does your current structure consist of? I need to determine allowable loads.

5. Does your current roof leaking into the garage or under the slab? Tell the truth now............

I will tell you how to do this project, but need info. Take a look at Hanover Prest Pavers. They are the only thing that lasts on a roof due to their 8700 PSI Density.

Forget tile.
