I have installed greenboard in the bathroom. Now I want to put wood over the greenboard. I want to put wood on the walls and the ceiling. I plan to seal the wood then stain it a natural color. A builder told me the wood would rot because the greenboard would hold the moisture. If the wood is sealed properly it would be no different than paint. Should I use the wood?

Wood in a bathroom is generally not a good idea. But the problem is not moisture held by the greenboard, it is moisture, period. If thoroughly sealed(all sides) before putting it up, it should be ok, provided that regular maintenance is done. Renew the finish at the fisrt indication of problems.

be sure to seal all cut ends also. And use a quality product or it will not last very long. As stated, maintenance will be critical to your lasting success. Greenboard will attract moisture. I would cover this with #15 felt over it and under the wood.

Dont do it! Use a synthetic product that meets your liking. Something you dont have to maintain
and wont rot.

Synthetic products are not maintenance free. Trex for example will grow more mold than wood decking. Proper ventilation is critical to a sucessfull bath remodel no matter what you use to build it.

Wood can be used in bathrooms as long as it is not in a wet area. For instance using it for shower walls would not be a good idea. I would seal that green board real well with something like B.I.N. (alcohol based shellac primer) before applying the wood. Some say it is overkill for a bathroom but I like it because it works well and drys quickly. That said any good sealing primer should work. Also prime your wood including end grain and back before installing it. Finish it with a good grade paint specifically for bathrooms. I like the Sherman Williams products.
