Remodel of kitchen/living room split-level house to "open concept" in Northeast

Morning all... not really a DIY question, but I own a split-level and planning a somewhat "major" reno to open up the kitchen/dining/living room areas. This is a task that I cannot complete myself, but still want to be hands on. Being this my first home and remodel, any advice as far as looking for a contractor? Structural engineer or architect? and generally speaking advice on quotes/budget and staying away from the "scam" contractors....

If you use an architect or designer, they will know of a contractor that delivers good value for money spent---

Some contractors are 'design build' outfits---they can do the engineering and construction.

Remember, with the 'design /build companies--they own the designs---so if you like their plans put not their price---you will not get the working drawings.

The local building department might be able to provide you with registered contractors. (but not a reccomendation)

lumber yards might offer a suggestion of a good contractor---

Mike pretty much covered it. I do have one additional thought.

I think I would start by spending a few hundred dollars to get a structural engineer to look at the house and offer opinions. Written opinions and drawings add to the cost but you may need them if you proceed.

Every SL house I ever seen the center wall between the LR and kitchen is a load bearing wall for the ceiling joists and sometimes the roof. Removing it requires some engineering. Depending on what is below where the beam weight must transfer to a footer can greatly affect the cost and feasibility of the entire project.
