I got a Trane Heat Pump unit that is around 19 years old. For the last few days the relay located in the box located inside the house is been making an horrible clicking sound. I went to the garage and pull guard duty on the relay and when the outside unit calls for emergency heat (gas) due to being too cold outside, the relay is having a hard time making firm contact and it switches on and off very quickly, creating some sparks within the relay. After that a normal click sound is heard and the gas fires up and goes but not for long. I will buy a new relay today and replace it but I'm afraid that I will be addressing the consequence instead of the cause, thanks in advance for all your help. The unit is an XE80 in the inside and a XE1000 outside.

While it could be that ice cube relay. More likely its a wire connection in the outdoor unit.

I went ahead and replaced the relay. I made a quick visual inspection of the old relay and it looks fine (not burnt marks). Now I got to wait until tonight or tomorrow morning (too warm outside right now) to see if that solved the issue.

It finally got cold enough and it sis it again, when the outside unit calls for heat the relay in the previous post goes crazy trying to make contact. It seems that is not getting enough juice in the winding of the relay to keep it firmly engaged. Tomorrow I will take the outside unit and see if there is any obvious defects in the wiring or connections. Also, its being about a year since I replaced the 24V transformer, the contactor in the outside unit was burning them up. Any suggestion on what I should be looking for its greatly appreciated.
