we would like to take out a telepost in our basement.weve heard you can reinforce the wooden beam with steel plates on both sides.my question,is this possible?and if so what size of steel plate,thickness.type would we use.how far apart for bolts?what type and size bolts etc.the span is 17 ft.thanks sherry

I've seen an episode of Holmes on Homes where he did something like this. He used an engineer to spec it. You'll need an engineer to spec this too. Bolts and bolt spacing will be part of that.
