I am looking at putting Tamko Heritage Premium or GAF Timberline Ultra HD on my roof but the roofer I like is only certified with IKO. He has told me he will put whatever I want on the roof.

I have talked to a number of other roofer in my quest for a new roof and been told to only go with a roofer who is certified with a certain manufaturer. May be a dumb ques to you guys...but is this true??? What do I risk if I use someone who is only certified with IKO??? He has put on both GAF and Tamko in the past.

Also, I have been told that because my roofer is not certified with Tamko or GAF I will need to pay to register the warranty and it will cost me $6-$7 per square.

1.) Do i need to register my warranty??? 2.) Does it cost to register the warranty with Tamko or GAF because my roofer is not certified by them.

Please help if you have time. Thanks.

Alot of things are said by others who think they are knowledgeable with roofing requirements and information.

A shingle is a shingle.Lifetimes and limited lifetimes,3 tabs, are basically the same and the same as far as installation.5",5-5/8" etc.,

Just because you are certified with IKO does not mean you cannot install Tamko or GAF or Certainteed or Atlas or any other shingle.

Warranties are submitted to the manufacture once the job is complete.A standard warranty is free from the manufacture, certified or not.

Once you start a gold star coverage or 5 stars etc. then the materials will have to be installed by a certified contractor to assume this coverage.

When you have a superior extended premium warranty ALL roof products installed have to be made by the manufacture with who you are receiving a premium warranty.(shingles, felt, ice and water shield, vents etc.)

Pick the contractor you feel the best about.

Thanks Roofmaster417...

...I know prob more dumb questions from me...but is the warranty that Tamko gives on the Heritage Premium (20 year) and the warranty that GAF gives for the Timberline Ultra HD (10 year) considered GOLD STAR COVERAGE or FIVE STAR COVERAGE???

ie...I should make sure all the products for the job are either all Tamko or GAF depending if I choose the Heritage Premium or the Timberline Ultra HD???

Again thanks for your help...I really appreciate your knowledge.

(The 20 year and 10 years your referencing is the time frame given for 100% replacement cost of materials if a defect is found in that time frame, note it doe's not cover the cost of waste removal or labor.
The gold star coverages do include waste removal and labor but the system has to be installed by a certified contractor in order to get it.)

(If you use a certified contractor and opt for the gold star or other extended warranties, then yes you do.
If you opt for the basic warranty, then no you don't.)

Again thanks for your help...I really appreciate your knowledge.

Roofmasters response was good, and to read more you can go to,
Tamko Website , GAF Website , Certainteed Website , and read about all the warranty, installation specs, etc., yourself.

Tamko has no Heritage 20yr shingle.,The Heritage series starts at a 30 yr(Limited lifetime) Architectural shingle. To tell you the truth Tamko no longer makes a 20yr shingle,,,they start at 25 yr Elite glass 3-tab.

And GAF lifetimes and limited lifetimes start with a 30 year manufacture warranty.

An extended warranty sounds like what you are wanting information on.

GAf has a life time ltd warranty, but it is only 100% coverage on defects for the first 10 years, then the percent they pay drops.

Tamko has a 30 yr ltd warranty and the time frame for 100% coverage on defect is longer, but then it also begins dropping.

That's the basic warranty, the extended warranties are worded differently.
