Follow directions, usually 24-48 hrs is good. Vacuum and wipe with a tack rag to get up dust and stuff.

As long as you applied the stain and wiped off the excess you can coat the next day. I use Bona Kemi Bonaseal as a bonding agent between the oil based stain and my first coat of final finish. For a final finish I use Bona Kemi Mega. You want at least two coats of Mega and as long as you apply within 48 hours there is no need to sand. I will apply the first two coats of Mega then wait for at least a week then lightly sand it with a Maroon scotchbrite pad, vacuum, tack with a water dampened rag and apply the last coat of Mega.
Help!

So what should I do if I applied the stain and didn't wipe very much of it off because I liked the color? We did this on Sunday and 4 days later, it's still sticky. Any suggestions?
Oil & water don't mix. It could actually take days for the oil base stain to dry well enough to apply waterborne finish & get it to adhear. Why not use an oil based poly?
I second the last post. I don't know why you are applying a water base over an oil base. You may have problems with the water base adhering. Don't the directions on the can say not to do this?

I make my living installing & refinishing sand on site wood floors. I've refinished some floors using waterborne, but it's been years. Now, I'm purley an oil based finish man.
It's hard to beat an oil based finish on a floor. Most people don't like the fumes or the time it takes to dry but it is worth it. The water based finishes are getting better though.
