I have vertical tongue and groove cedar siding on the front of my house and it needs refinished. It was done before we moved in but it's been several years and I want to re-stain it.

Should I power wash it, sand it, both???

What's the best way to apply the stain... brush, roller etc.? It's on the shady side of my house so I guess I don't need to worry about the sun baking it in while I'm doing it.

What about cutting in around the windows and doors too... will I get lap marks if I cut in before I do the rest?

I have worked with the siding before, beautiful, but it does require much maintenance. If they are thick enough I would recommend sanding them, although you are looking at a big job.

When you reapply the new stain, since you have a large area to cover, use the roller. I like to let the wood soak up the stain a little before continue.

If it is a huge job I would recommend contracting the work out. If you don't have a whole lot of time on your hands, it could be worth your while.

And make that like a 3/4" nap or thicker roller cover. Have a brush handy to chase after your roller passes---immediately---to smooth out lap marks and make sure you get stain into the joints.

Spraying it is another possibility if there no danger of overspray to neighbors, your cars, etc. And you have to mask off carefully. Personally, I would roll it as suggested because you will get better coverage and penetration---IMO.
