I want to install recessed lights in a finished family room. Above the roo is the subfloor of my upstears bed room. The ceiling joists are 2x8. I measured the 6 inch recessed can and it is 7 1/2 inches. Not too much wiggle room at the top of the can and the ceiling. IS there a minimum that need between the can and the ceiling?

This probably won't be any help, but I ran across the same situation not too long ago and decided that I didn't like the lack of clearance. So we installed surface mount halogens instead of cans.

As long as they do not touch they are OK. An inch would be nice.
If they are real close you can use IC rated cans. They typically have a heat shield above the lamp base.
Whatever you do DO NOT use Emerald brand recessed cans.
