I am considering installing recessed lighting in my living room and I am concerned with a couple of things.
I don't want to tear open the ceiling to install the housing. I believe their are kits that can accomplish this.
There is insulation and flexible insulated duct work in the ceiling. Do these housings running hot where I would have to avoid these things?

You'll need to use insulation contact (IC) rated cans. You can use remodeling cans which only require cutting holes for the cans themselves and do not need to be mounted to the joists. The duct work might give you a problem if it is in the way. Depending on the type of duct work you may need to find places where it will not touch cans. I would not put any of the flexible duct with the insulation covered in plastic up against any of the cans.

Using remodel housing for a whole ceiling is tricky because you never know what you might find in the ceiling. Imagine getting your whole layout planned out, start cutting holes, get 3/4 finished and find some plumbing or duct work where you need to put a can.

I toyed with this and then ended up pulling out my ceiling for new construction housings. I'm glad I did.
It would've been a frustrating experience the other way.

I contacted Halo and they said their H7 family of IC rated housing can be in contact with combustable materials (I asked specifically about a PVC drain pipe).

I have a view of the ceiling from a bathroom that has drop ceiling tiles so I know the only obstructions are insulation and the duct work. I will have to try and install them in areas that they do not touch the duct work. I hope I can! If not I will scrap this because I'm not pulling the ceiling.
